webcam

In partnership with BBC Cumbria and with funding from Natural England the webcam provides a daily update from the osprey's nest overlooking Bassenthwaite lake

The webcam is live but our Ospreys have decided to move to a new nest site. We hope to set up a new camera overlooking the new nest but this will take some time as we have to avoid disturbing the birds.

The webcam is updated every 10 minutes from 10am until around 3pm

If you see a great image send it to BBC Cumbria with a note of your name and any comments who will add it to the Osprey gallery.

The webcam view will change periodically as we have added two new camera angles and a zoom camera.

Please note that occasionally, due to the remote location of the equipment, an image is not uploaded and an image number(s) may be skipped. If coloured bars are shown where the picture should be, this is due to the equipment, which is battery powered, having to recharge.

For the technically interested the image is sent from the nest camera via cable to the nest security team, then by cable to a microwave dish where it is bounced across Bassenthwaite Lake to Dodd Wood and then back across the lake again to Whinlatter Visitor Centre. Once at Whinlatter the signal is split with one going to the Exhibition in the centre and a second signal is sent by satellite broadband, thanks to Ethnet , to the internet where it is hosted by BBC Cumbria.
