In 2002 the project received external funding to redevelop the nest camera facility at Whinlatter Forest Park, the viewing facilities at Dodd Wood, and protection equipment at the nest site at Wythop.

Currently, the project is funded by visitor donations, and support from the Tourism and Conservation Partnership, but operates at a loss which is shared by the Forestry Commission, RSPB and Lake District National Park Authority.
